Climbing the Ortler

On July 9, 2015, we started from Villa Erna in Seis am Schlern and headed to Sulden for our very first ascent of the Ortler. We had a climb of about 2.5 hours along a winding and partly rocky hiking trail leading up to the Bayerhütte. With its extraordinary 360-degree panoramic view, the hut stood proudly on an impressive rocky outcrop. We wished each other good night in the shared dormitory and fell asleep full of excitement.
Early in the morning at dawn, we set off. The glacier sparkled before us. At the beginning, it was all about climbing – up one rocky tower and down the next. Crampons made the ascent to the summit easier. Step by step, crossing glacier crevasses and steep slopes, we finally reached the long-awaited summit after almost four hours.
We put down our backpacks, took a deep breath, put on our fleece jackets, sat down for a moment, had something to drink, and simply admired the breathtaking mountain world around us. At the summit of the Ortler, time stands still.
We were happy.
